Why you shouldn't use gel wax candles (and what to burn instead)
Share
Let's be honest - gel wax candles look cool. Their clear, jelly-like texture and ability to suspend decorations like glitter, seashells, or fruit slices are definitely eye-catching. But if you're serious about clean, safe, and intentional living, here’s why you may want to skip the gel and go with soy candles.
What is gel wax?
Gel wax isn’t actually wax at all. It’s a combination of
- Mineral oil - a byproduct of petroleum
- Polymer resin - which gives it that rubbery, jelly-like texture
It's petroleum based - Not plant based
Gel wax is made from petroleum, while alternatives like soy wax are:
- Plant-derived
- Renewable & biodegradable
- Non-toxic & clean-burning
If your home is your sanctuary, burning petroleum products isn’t exactly the vibe.
It burns hotter — and riskier
Gel wax candles burn at a higher temperature and require specific containers to be safe. If the wrong fragrance is used or too much is added, the result could be a fire hazard. Not ideal for your cozy self-care Sunday.
With natural waxes like soy, the risk of overheating is much lower, and the burn is gentler and more even.
It doesn’t align with clean living
At its core, clean living is about surrounding yourself with safe, non-toxic, and sustainable ingredients. Gel wax doesn't fit that promise. It's :
- Derived from fossil fuels
- Not biodegradable
- Prone to overheating and safety risks
- Can include synthetic fragrances not suitable to clean air
